Alexander Thomas Paterson (1833-1909)
A.T. Paterson, Chief Agent of the Phoenix Assurance Co. of London at Montreal
He was born in Irvine, Ayrshire, where he began his business apprenticeship. He came to Canada in 1850 in the employ of Gillespie, Moffat & Co., importers and general merchants of Montreal, of which his maternal uncle, John Jamieson, was a partner. One of the firm's most lucrative sidelines was insurance and since 1804 they had been the agents of the Phoenix Fire Assurance Company in London. Alexander became the Chief Agent and President of the Montreal Telegraph Company, the Montreal Elevating Company, and the Londonderry Iron Company. He was a director of the Bank of Montreal and a Life Governor of the Royal Victoria Hospital. He was married at Montreal to Geraldine, daughter Major Peter MacDougall of Outremont. They were the parents of six children and their eldest son married a daughter of R.B. Angus, President of the Bank of Montreal. He died while salmon fishing on the Restigouche River, New Brunswick.
