Alexander Rae Allan (1845-1901)

Alexander R. Allan, of Brockville, Ontario

He was the eldest son of the richest man in Canada, but according to his father he was, "not cut out for business" and instead his younger brother, Sir Montagu Allan, became his father's principal heir. When his father died, from his estimated $8-million fortune Alexander was willed $50,000 ($100,000 less than any of his sisters) and the title deed to his house in Brockville. He married Eva, grand-daughter of General Sir Robert Travers, and lived quietly with their son in Brockville.
