Hugh Travers Allan (1875-1923)

He was the paternal grandson of Sir Hugh Allan, the richest man in Canada; the maternal great-grandson of General Sir Robert Travers; and, the grandnephew of General James Travers who was awarded the Victoria Cross during the Indian Mutiny. He left Montreal to travel around the world with his cousin, James Bryce Allan. They took a private Dahabiya (sailing barge) down the Nile and arrived in Luxor, Egypt, in January, 1923. On the 23rd, Howard Carter (who had unearthed Tutankhamun's tomb two months before) was among a group they invited to take tea with them on their boat. On the evening of the 30th, Travers Allan set off by himself to see Luxor's famous ruins in moonlight. His body was found the following day, two miles from Luxor on the road to Karnack where he was presumed to have been murdered by robbers. He was unmarried.
