Abraham Gould (1766-1823)

Dairy Farmer, of Roxbury, Delaware Co., New York

He was born at Fairfield, Connecticut. His father was killed when he was eleven, and two years later the British torched their home. In 1778, he married Anna Osborn who persuaded him to become a farmer having already lost three of his brothers at sea. They migrated to New York, leased a 150-acre dairy farm in the Catskills and built the Gould Homestead. It was a tough life, but he was moderately successful and built the region's first cider-press to complement his orchard. He was the grandfather of Jay Gould who became one of the richest - and most reviled - men in America.
