William S. Pendleton (1795-1879)

William S. Pendleton, of Staten Island, New York & Pendleton's Lithography

He studied lithography in Europe and introduced the art to North America in 1828. He came to Boston via Montreal where he and his brother, John, established the first commercially successful lithography in the States. Circa 1830, he founded the New England Bank Note Company with Messrs Perkins and Morse. He came to Staten Island in about 1845 where he invested in real estate and may have built Bay Villa as a wedding present for his son, John. He retired to St. Augustine, Florida.
