William Lawrence Chamberlain (1832-1880)

William L. Chamberlain, of "Maizefield" Red Hook, Dutchess County, New York

He grew up between New York City and Maizefield/Maizeland in Dutchess County. He became a banker but retired on inheriting Maizefield. He continued to breed and exhibit the celebrated flock of Silesian Merino sheep established by his father and kept the Maizeland Kennels which imported the first Bassett Hound into the United States - "Nemours". He was a life member of the New-York State Agricultural Society. He was married to Mary Bradhurst Remington in 1865 and had four children. His daughters married two of the Chanler brothers, known as "the Astor Orphans" of Rokeby: Alice, married Lewis Stuyvesant Chanler, Lt.-Governor of New York; and, Julia married the artist, Robert Winthrop Chanler.
