William Biddle (d.1711)

WB I, of "Mount Hope" New Jersey; Member of the Governor's Council etc.

He was born in Birlingham, Worcestershire, and came to London as a shoemaker. In 1680, he emigrated with his wife and children to Barbados before settling in New Jersey the following year (1681). He was a Justice of Burlington County from 1682 until his death; one of the ten members of the Governor's Council (1683); Member (1687) and President (1706) of the Board of Trustees elected by the Proprietors to conduct their business; and, Representative of the New Jersey General Assembly for Perth Amboy (1703). He lived at "Mount Hope" (see images) in Burlington where he and his wife held the Quarterly Meetings of the Society of Friends (Quakers). They were the parents of six children of whom only two (listed) lived to adulthood.
