Tucker Coles (1782-1861)

of "Tallwood" State Representative of Albemarle Co., Virginia

His father had been a close friend of both Thomas Jefferson and James Monroe, and it was his father who built him "Tallwood" (see images) on the upper quarter (2,000-acres) of the Enniscorthy plantation in 1803-05.  He added a second floor to Tallwood in 1820, and the wings were constructed circa 1826, giving it an overall length 134-feet in length by which time it contained 25-rooms plus bathrooms. It is said that on the 7th November each year, the ghost of Selena Coles - who died from a gunshot wound in the house - appears in one of the upper bedrooms. In 1810, he married Helen, daughter of Sir Peyton Skipwith, 6th Bt. They died without children and "Tallwood" was left to their grandnephew, Peyton Skipwith Coles, who sold it in 1897.
