Sir Peyton Skipwith (1740-1805)

7th Bt., of "Prestwould" near Clarksville, Mecklenburg Co., Virginia

He acquired the "Prestwould" plantation from William Byrd in 1765, naming it for "Prestwould," the Skipwith family seat back in England. Covering 10,000-acres and worked by 235-slaves, the plantation stretched for ten miles along the Roanoke River. From about 1794, he started building the new mansion (see images) a mile in land on the north side of the river, moving in with his family in 1797.
