Thomas Suffern Tailer (1866-1928)
T. Suffern Tailer, of Honeysuckle Lodge, Newport, Rhode Island
He was born in New York City, apparently a direct descendant of William Tailer (1675-1731), Acting Governor of Massachusetts. He graduated from Harvard University (apparently co-founded by another ancestor) and joined the family banking firm, Tailer & Co., of New York. He lived at the Plaza Hotel during the fall and winter months but otherwise "he was devoted to Newport" and lived at Honeysuckle Lodge. He was an avid golfer and established the annual Gold Mashie tournament, attracting some of the county's best players. The course he built at Newport was one of the "most remarkable in the world". It was only 9-holes, but each one was a replica of the world's most famous holes. He also built a polo field at Newport and had been a useful tennis player when he was younger. In 1893, he married Maude Lorillard who divorced him in 1902 and five months later married his former business partner, Lord Revelstoke. She also took custody of their only child together. He was married again in 1909 to Harriet Stewart Brown in "one of the most notable ceremonies of the time" in Baltimore. Her father, Alexander Brown, was head of his family's bank and gave her $500,000 as a wedding gift. They had two children (T. Suffern Tailer Jr., and Mrs W. Gurnee Dyer). He died of a heart attack after finishing Christmas dinner at his father-in-law's townhouse.
