Thomas Smith (1669-1738)

of Yeamans Hall, 2nd Landgrave of South Carolina

He was born in Exeter, England, and came to Carolina with his father in 1684. The Lord Proprietors made his father a Landgrave and when he died in 1694 Thomas took the title as was his birthright. In 1711, he purchased a tract of land that he named the Smith Barony on which he intended to build Smithtown that never materialized. In 1716, he was granted a further 12,000-acres in Berkeley County, known as the Wiskinboo Barony. His portrait in the image shows him as a young officer in 1691. He had ten children by each of his wives but only eleven (listed) survived to adulthood.
