Thomas Howard Howard (1862-1904)
of the Howard Mansion, Hyde Park, New York; Manager of the Vanderbilt Estate
He was born at Providence, Rhode Island. He was a great-grandson of Col. Nicholas Fish, Adjutant-General of New York; a great-x2 grandson of Peter Stuyvesant and Brigadier-General John Neilson, Co-Founder of Rutgers University; and, a great-x3 grandson of Lt.-Colonel Gilbert Livingston.
In 1892, he married Rose Anthony Post, sister of Daisy Post (1876-1969) "the last Gilded Age Hostess" and niece of Lulu (Anthony) Vanderbilt, wife of Frederick William Vanderbilt. Through his wife, he became involved in her uncle's business and managed the Vanderbilt Mansion estate at Hyde Park, New York. While Vanderbilt was rebuilding the mansion house, he also built the Howards a new home (see image) on the estate, known today as the "Howard Mansion" to which they later (1901) added a two-story Tudor-style carriage house. During the summer, the Howards stayed at Rough Point in Newport. Thomas died at his Hyde Park home in 1904, but his widow remained a prominent socialite and continued to divide her time between Hyde Park and her townhouse at 1115 Fifth Avenue on the corner of East 93rd Street. They were the parents of two children.
