Thomas Hodgson (1802-1879)
of Fiske & Hodgson, Stone Quarry Operators, Vermont; retired to Lacolle, Quebec
He was born at Durham in England and at the age of eighteen came out to Canada with his parents. Having had little education in England, he attended school in Champlain, New York, where he acquired a knowledge of the stone quarrying business. Early on in his career he became associated with a Mr. Bowman in operating the Fiske Quarry at Isle La Motte, Vermont, where their first contract was to supply much of the stone for the Champlain Canal in Canada. He subsequently went into partnership with a Mr. Fiske. Fiske & Hodgson provided a considerable portion of the stone used for the Victoria Bridge at Montreal. He retired to a farm at Lacolle, Quebec, where he died. He married Margaret Peart, also a native of England, who also emigrated with her parents at about the same time as her husband. They were the parents of ten children.
