Jonathan Hodgson (1827-1913)
of 340 Peel Street, Montreal; Merchant & Vice-President of the Merchant's Bank
He was born in Clintonville, Quebec, and in 1845 he became a clerk in a store in Napierville, Quebec. From 1850 to 1870, he was a partner in the wholesale dry goods firm of Foulds & Hodgson. After Foulds retired, the firm was reorganised and he became the senior partner in Hodgson, Sumner & Co., Ltd. He was Vice-President of the Merchant's Bank of Canada and a director the Almonte Knitting Co., Victor Hudon Cotton Co., Montreal Cotton Company, Paton Woollen Mills of Sherbrooke, Royal Victoria Life Insurance Co., and the Alliance Insurance Co. In 1854, he married Margaret Cassils, sister-in-law of Duncan McIntyre of Craigruie, and they were the parents of six children.
