Thomas Cadwalader Meredith (1779-1855)

Major Thomas Cadwalader Meredith, of "Otter Hall" Trenton, New Jersey

He studied law with his brother-in-law, John Read, and was admitted to the Bar of Philadelphia in 1803. Two years later, he left Philadelphia to live at his father's country home "Belmont". In the War of 1812, he served as a Major with the Pennsylvania Militia and from 1821 to 1823 he was Prothonotary, Register of Wills and Recorder of Deeds for Wayne County. Afterwards he moved to the "Meredith Cottage" at Carbondale to manage his land and coal investments, and died at "Otter Hall" near Trenton, New Jersey. In 1822, he married Sarah, daughter of William Gibson, Merchant, of New York, and they were the parents of four children, three of whom survived infancy.
