Gen. Samuel Meredith (1741-1817)

U.S. Congressman from Pennsylvania & 1st Treasurer of the United States

He lived in a large mansion on the north side of Chestnut Street, two doors above Fifth Street, opposite Independence Hall. His country seats included: "Green Hill" in Philadelphia County inherited from his father; "Otter Hall" near Trenton, New Jersey; and, "Belmont" near Pleasant Mount (present day Scranton) in Wayne County, Pennsylvania. He retired to Belmont in 1801. He owned 75,000-acres in Wayne County, 67,000-acres in Lackawanna and Wyoming, and with George Clymer held nearly a million acres in Pennsylvania, New York, West Virginia, and Kentucky. He married Margaret, sister of Brigadier-General John Cadwalader and had six children.
