The Very Rev. Francis Bowes Sayre (1915-2008)

Dean of the Washington National Cathedral & Civil Rights Leader

He was a maternal grandson of U.S. President Woodrow Wilson and the last child born at the White House. As Dean of the Washington National Cathedral for 27 years, he used his pulpit to confront McCarthyism, racial tensions, and the Vietnam War. He was a fierce opponent of segregation and marched alongside Martin Luther King from Selma to Montgomery. He died at his home in Vineyard Haven.
