Edward Bowen (1780-1866)

Q.C., Chief Justice of the Superior Court of the Province of Quebec

He was born at Kinsale, Co. Cork. He was educated at Drogheda Academy and came out to Lower Canada in 1797 with his great-aunt Ann (Hamilton) Caldwell, wife of the Receiver-General of Lower Canada who built the elegant Caldwell Manor overlooking Quebec. Bowen studied law under Chief Justice Jonathan Sewell and was called to the Bar of Lower Canada in 1803. 1849, he succeeded Sewell as Chief Justice of Quebec. When he married Eliza, daughter of James Davidson, he became brother-in-law to his cousin, Sir John Caldwell. They lived at the Bowen House on Rue Mont-Carmel.
