Stephen Whitney (1841-1905)

Stephen Whitney, of New Haven, Connecticut

He was born at New Haven, Connecticut. He studied at Yale University before taking a tour of Europe in 1860. From 1861 to 1863 he served as a Lieutenant in the 4th U.S. Cavalry. From 1867 to 1884, he was a sugar planter at Woodlawn Plantation, Plaquemines, Louisiana, but returned north to spend the summers at New Haven. From 1886 until his death, he lived permanently at the Henry Whitney Mansion in New Haven. He was married in 1864 to Margaret Lawrence Johnson, of New York. She died in 1884 and two years later he married his widow's sister, Louisa. He had 5-children.
