Henry Whitney Mansion

Whitney Avenue, New Haven, Connecticut

Built in 1835, for Henry Whitney (1812-1856) and his first wife, Hannah Eugenia Lawrence (1815-1844). Henry was the second son of Stephen Whitney, a native of Derby, Connecticut, who in 1830 was named as one of New York's first five millionaires. This house was a wedding gift to Henry and Hannah who were married in the same year that it was commissioned. It was designed by New York's pre-eminent architect of that era, Alexander Jackson Davis. Henry Whitney died in 1856 and his widow (his second wife, Maria) continued to live here until her death in 1886. It was afterwards lived in by Henry's only son, Stephen Whitney (1841-1905). It was demolished in 1924.
