Sarah (Franklin) Bache (1743-1808)

Mrs. "Sally" Sarah (Franklin) Bache

She was born in Philadelphia where she was well-educated and excelled at music. Her father described her as "affectionate, dutiful and industrious" and after her mother's death in 1774 she served as his political hostess. During the Revolutionary War, she raised money for the Continental Army and was involved with The Ladies Association of Philadelphia, which at its peak employed more than 2,000 women. In 1780, she took control of the association, raising money for the patriotic cause and supervising the sewing of shirts for American soldiers. In 1767, she married Richard Bache and was the mother of nine children of whom seven (listed) survived to adulthood.
