Samuel Holt (1786-1856)
of Carbury, near Athy, Co. Kildare
He lived at his wife's property at Carbury (or Carberry), Co. Kildare, inherited in 1742 from her grandmother, Mrs Hannah (Colley) Grattan, connected to the Colleys of Castle Carbury. He served as a Cavalryman in the Rebellion of 1798 and held land leases totalling more than 450-acres at Coolavacoose and Haggart Farm, both near Carbury in Co. Kildare. In 1833, the Chief Constable of Kildare reported, "the dwelling house of Mr. Holt at Carberry, was attacked by an armed party, who ordered him to discharge a servant man next day, which he did. They then demanded that a friend of Mr. Holt's, who they said was in the house, should be surrendered up to them to be shot; for having, as they said, voted against Mr. O'Connell at the last Dublin election".
