Robert Paterson (1791-1838)

of "Birthwood" Biggar, Lanarkshire; formerly a Merchant at Quebec

He was married in 1822 at "Birthwood" to Grace, daughter of Humphrey Denholm (1756-1833), J.P., of Birthwood, and his wife Elizabeth Gillespie (1774-1862). He joined two of his brothers in Canada almost certainly connected to the mercantile firm of Gillespie, Moffat & Co. In 1830, he built a large stone house at what is now 73 Rue Ste.-Ursule, Quebec. After he returned to Scotland, he sold it to Sir James Stuart. Robert and Grace's eldest son, Robert Paterson (b.1824), succeeded to Birthwood.
