Robert Hare (1752-1811)

Framer of the 1st Constitution & Speaker of the Senate of Pennsylvania

He was born in Woolwich, Kent, and came to Pennsylvania in 1773 with a gift from his father of £1,500. Establishing himself in business he became a prominent merchant and represented the city in the General Assembly (1791) and the State Senate of which he became Speaker and ex-officio Lieutenant-Governor (1796). He was a trustee of the University of Pennsylvania and a co-founder of the Philadelphia "First City Troop". However, he took no part in the Revolution, exiling himself and his family to Virginia where they lived with his brother-in-law at Westover. In 1775, he married Margaret, daughter of Charles Willing, Mayor of Philadelphia. They lived in Germantown and had seven children of whom four (listed) lived to adulthood.
