Col. John Hare Powel (1786-1856)

of Philadelphia; Art Collector & Member of the Pennsylvania Senate

He was born "John Powel Hare" but he was adopted by his mother's widowed and childless sister, Elizabeth (Willing) Powel, and he legally changed his name when he attained his majority, thereby inheriting the fortune of his late uncle, Samuel Powel. He served as a Colonel during the War of 1812-14 and Secretary to the U.S. Legation at the Court of St. James. In 1817, he married Julia, daughter of Col. Andrew de Veaux, of Beaufort, South Carolina. They were the parents of nine children.
