Rev. Nathaniel Bristed (1733-1810)

Rector of Bishop's Caundle etc., Dorset & Headmaster of Sherborne School (1766-90)

He was born at Lewes in Sussex and graduated from Emmanuel College, Cambridge (B.A. 1758; M.A. 1767). He was the Headmaster of Sherborne School (1766-1790) but was described as the, "Pluralist under whom the school went down". He was presented with the Rectory of Bishop's Caundle in 1780 by Henry, Lord Digby, and he was also Vicar of Haydon (1780), Sherborne (1781), and North Wootton (1810). He died leaving a large will and is buried at Bishop's Caundle. He was married twice and was survived by seven children including John, who emigrated to New York and married Magdalen, eldest daughter of America's first multi-millionaire, John Jacob Astor.
