Pierre Markoe (1702-1747)

Pierre/Pieter/Peter Markoe, Sugar Planter of "Spanishtown" on the Island of St Croix

He was the grandson of the French Huguenot Pierre Marcou who fled from Montbéliard in France (near the Swiss border) and settled on St. Croix in 1685. The family built up large sugar plantations and a flourishing trade with Europe and the British Colonies. His father, Jan Marcou, served as Governor of the Island of St. Croix (now one of the Virgin Islands) and the spelling of their name changed to "Markoe" when they became Danish subjects, although they retained the French pronunciation.
