In 1785, he built the "Lee-Fendall House" (pictured) in Alexandria for his second wife, Elizabeth Steptoe (widow of Col. Philip Ludwell Lee and a close friend of the Washingtons), on land purchased from her son-in-law, Col. "Light Horse Harry" Lee.
