Peter P. Goulet (1764-1828)

Peter P. Goulet, Merchant, of 63 Water Street, New York City

He and his brother married two of the daughters of Thomas Buchanan, a prosperous Scottish farmer who grew turnips, corn and potatoes on 13-acres surrounding 45th Street and Third Avenue. It was through this property that the Goelet family accumulated their vast real estate empire in Manhattan, second only to the Astors. When his widow died in 1848 her fortune was estimated at $250,000. They had 4-children and their grandchildren included Elbridge T. Gerry, Ogden and Robert Goelet.
