Nicholas Hoffman (1736-1800)

Merchant, of New York City & Red Hook, Dutchess Co., New York

He was born in Dutchess County, New York. He became an auctioneer as Hoffman & Ludlow on Dock Street but it would appear that he broke off the partnership by 1780 when he was found to be an East India merchant at 907 Water Street. He was a Member of the New York Chamber of Commerce and was appointed to the Committee of One Hundred in 1775 to take control of the government during the Revolution. He was described as, "a Dutchman, slow, inflexible in honesty and pure in character". He married Sarah, a daughter of Supreme Court Justice David Ogden of New York and his wife, Gertrude Gouverneur. They had three children (listed).
