Magdalena (Astor) Bristed (1788-1832)

Mrs Magdalena Vorfelder (Astor) Bentzon, afterwards Bristed

Her first marriage to the Governor of the Danish West Indies was not a happy one. Their two children died in infancy and she returned to New York to live with her parents before being granted a divorce in 1819. In the following year, she married John Bristed, an English lawyer in New York who was later ordained into the Episcopal Church. They were the parents of one son, Charles Astor Bristed, who from 1832 grew up in the household of Magdalena's father at the Astor Mansion in Hellgate, N.Y.
