Luther Terry (1813-1900)
American Painter, of Palazzo Odescalchi, Rome, Italy
He was described as an undistinguished painter whose fortunes improved rapidly when he married the widowed Mrs Louisa (Ward) Crawford. Her first husband, Thomas Gibson Crawford, was one of Rome's most prominent and popular American sculptors and she herself was heiress to a fortune as the daughter of Samuel Ward, President of the Bank of Commerce in New York. As a result their apartment at the Palazzo Odescalchi was one of the most cosmopolitan meeting places on the Italian capital.
