Lt. William Tiffany (1868-1898)

of Roosevelt's "Rough Riders" the 1st Regiment of Volunteer Cavalry

He was born in Newport, R.I., and was known for being impeccably attired while mixing in the highest social circles. On the outbreak of the Spanish-American War he joined Theodore Roosevelt's "Rough Riders". He saw action at Las Guasimas, San Juan Hill, and Santiago de Cuba. His health declined from exposure and hardships endured during the campaign and he was taken back to the Parker House in Boston where his condition continued to worsen and he died. He was unmarried. Roosevelt remembered him as, "one of the most gallant and efficient officers we had, a man of dauntless courage and absorbed attention to duty."
