Louis McLane (1819-1905)
President of Wells Fargo & Co. Express, and President of the Nevada Bank
He was born in Wilmington, Delaware. After graduating from St. Mary's College and Newark College, he served as an officer in the U.S. Navy between 1835 and 1850. He moved to Callifornia with the Gold Rush and went into the steamship business, becoming the first General Manager of Wells, Fargo & Company in San Francisco. In 1866, as the newly appointed President of Wells, Fargo & Co., he moved to New York City, but on being replaced in 1869 he moved to Baltimore, where he spent the remainder of his life. From 1875 to 1881 he was President of the Nevada Bank. He lived between his townhouse at 1101 North Charles Street and his country residence "Gerar" near Cockeysville, Maryland. In 1849, he married Sophie, daughter of the prominent Baltimore merchant, Samuel Hoffman, and they were the parents of eight children.
