Louis Gugy (1770-1840)

Lt.-Col. The Hon. Louis Gugy, M.L.C., J.P., Seigneur & Sheriff of Montreal

He was born at Paris and served in the 2nd Regiment of Swiss Guards. After the French Revolution he returned to Switzerland before leaving for Canada in 1794 having inherited his uncle's seigneuries there. After his father's death in 1797, he settled at Yamachiche before moving to Three Rivers two years later where he was appointed Sheriff, Justice of the Peace, and Lieutenant-Colonel of the Militia. In politics he was a Loyalist and in 1809 he was elected to the Legislative Assembly for Saint-Maurice and then the Legislative Council from 1818. In 1827, he was appointed Sheriff of Montreal but was removed from office ten years later after an official investigation that accused him of fraud and negligence. He was the first president of the Montreal Mechanics' Institution and the first President of the German Society of Montreal. He was married in Holborn, London, to Juliana, daughter of James Connor, Surgeon, and they had seven children.
