Louis Augustus de Pau (1815-1879)
Louis Augustus de Pau, of New Rochelle, New York; and Paris, France
He was born in Charleston, South Carolina, and grew up in New York. He was Napoleon III's fiscal agent in the United States. In 1847, he paid $3,050 for Starin's Glen Island at New Rochelle in Westchester County, New York. He bought the island from Newbury Davenport when it was called "Locust". There was "a grand mansion" in the middle of the island, "surrounded by well landscaped grounds and fish-ponds, and containing hot-houses, bathing facilities, billiard rooms and a bowling alley. De Pau used his home to entertain such luminaries as Presidents Chester A. Arthur, Ulysses S. Grant, James Garfield, Jenny Lind, Aaron Burr and Daniel Webster. De Pau sold the island and mansion to John Schmidt in 1862". In 1835, at the American Embassy in Paris, he married Angelina Jauncey Thorn (1813-1877) of New York City.
