Lewis Morris (1671-1746)

1st of Morrisania; Chief Justice of New York & Governor of New Jersey

He inherited vast estates in both New York and New Jersey, including the Manor of Morrisania in what is now the Bronx where he developed iron works and other industrial ventures. He was Chief Justice of New York and held various other colonial offices before his appointment as the first Royal Governor of New Jersey (1738-46) after the colony separated from New York's governance. He supported expanded suffrage and religious tolerance, and was known for his strong advocacy of colonial rights, frequently clashing with Royal authorities over issues of local autonomy and taxation. He was instrumental in establishing political precedents that would later influence the American Revolution. He married Isabella Graham and had twelve children (listed).
