Landon Carter (1710-1778)

Colonel Landon Carter I, of Sabine Hall, Virginia

He was born in Virginia and was educated in England. Returning to America, he built Sabine Hall and served in the Virginia House of Burgesses from 1748 to 1764. He was the owner of 50,000-acres and somewhere between 200 and 500 slaves, but he is best remembered today for the diary he kept recording planter and family life in 18th century Virginia. He was married three times: His first wife, Elizabeth, was the daughter of John Wormeley of Rosegill; his second wife, Maria, was the daughter of William Byrd II of Westover; and, his third wife, Elizabeth, was the daughter of William Beale of Richmond. By his wives he was the father of (1) Robert, succeeded to Sabine Hall (2) Landon, of "Pittsylvania" married Judith Fauntleroy (3) Elizabeth, married Nelson Berkeley (4) John, of "Sudley" married Janet Hamilton (5) Maria, married Robert Beverley of Blandfield (6) Judith, married Reuben Beale (7) Lucy, married William Colston.
