Joseph Manigault (1763-1843)

of 350 Meeting Street, Charleston, South Carolina

He was born at Charleston, South Carolina, and like his brother studied in London, returning home in 1784. He was elected to the General Assembly and was present at the South Carolina Convention that ratified the Constitution in 1788. He lived at the Joseph Manigault House (see images) on Meeting Street designed by his brother, Gabriel, and during George Washington's Southern Tour (1791) he hosted the President at his country home, Awendaw. His first wife, Maria, was the daughter of Arthur Middleton of Middleton Place, Signer of the U.S. Declaration of Independence. After she died, he married Charlotte, daughter of Dr. Charles Drayton, of Drayton Hall, Lieutenant-Governor of South Carolina. He had 8-children from his second marriage.
