Joseph Green (1703-1765)

J.P., Merchant, of Hanover Street, Boston, Massachusetts

He was a prominent merchant in partnership with Isaac Walker in the well-known firm of Green & Walker. In 1740, they were granted a large tract of land in Franklin County and in 1756 he was commissioned as a magistrate. He was liberal in his politics and although he died before the Revolution he had been a "substantial supporter" of the Patriots. In 1734, he paid Governor Belcher £3,600 for his "large house" on Hanover Street in Boston upon which the American House hotel was built a century later. His portrait was painted by John Singleton Copley. He married Anna Pierce and had many children but all their sons died childless except for Joshua.
