Jonathan Mayhew Wainwright (1864-1945)

U.S. Assistant Secretary of War & U.S. Congressman from New York

He was perhaps best known as Colonel J. Mayhew Wainwright. He built the Wainwright House that still stands at Milton Point, Rye, where he lived permanently from late 1931 with his wife. He wrote, "this stone house of ours was designed after and intended to recall the small early 17th century Chateau de Raincheval, in front of Doullens, France, which served as Brigade Headquarters of the 53rd Infantry Brigade, 27th Division, A.E.F., just before we moved forward to assault the Hindenburg Line on September 29, 1918." He married Laura, daughter of James Armistead Buchanan of Baltimore, Maryland, and they had just one daughter, Fonrose.
