Jonathan Mayhew Wainwright (1792-1854)
Rt. Rev. Jonathan M. Wainwright, D.D., D.C.L., Episcopal Bishop of New York
He was born in Liverpool and first came to America in 1802, graduating from Harvard (1812) where he then tutored. He received his Doctorate in Divinity (D.D.) from Union College (1823) and Harvard (1835), and was instrumental in the founding of New York University. The degree of D.C.L. was conferred on him by Oxford University in 1852, the same year that he was appointed the 4th Bishop of New York, a position he held until his death two years later. In 1818, he married Amelia, grand-daughter of Judge John Phelps, iron manufacturer and Signatory to the Constitutional Convention. They had fourteen children of whom eight (listed) lived to adulthood.
