Jonathan Amory (1654-1699)
Speaker of the Assembly of South Carolina etc.
He was born at Bristol, England. His father was one of Bristol's "Merchant Adventurers" and brought the family to Ireland, acquiring land in Co. Kerry. In about 1683, he went to Barbados and from about 1685, when his first wife died, he moved to Charleston where he was Speaker of the Assembly of South Carolina; Advocate-General of South Carolina; and, Public Treasurer of South Carolina. He had several children by both wives but was survived by just two: (1) Thomas, a successful merchant who settled in Boston and whose grand-daughter built Gore Place, and (2) Sarah, married Arthur Middleton, the parents of Henry Middleton of Middleton Place.
