John Watts de Peyster (1821-1897)

of "Rose Hill" Tivoli, Dutchess Co., New York; Adjutant-General of New York

He was described by his uncle William Wood as, "that queer eccentric fish who was in love with Emily Hone. Fortunately for herself she would not have him, for which I believe he never forgave her, her mother or her brother". He purchased an estate from his wife's cousin, Eugene A. Livingston, and in 1843  built "Rose Hill" (see images), a large Tuscan villa flanked by wings and a tower containing a library.
