Frederic de Peyster (1796-1882)

of 88 University Place, N.Y.C., President of the New York Historical Society

He was described by his brother-in-law, William Wood: "He was gentlemanly and well read, a lawyer of fair standing, and of an old Dutch family prominent even in the colonial days. His father, like the Kanes, was a loyalist, and I have heard had a pension from the British government, but all his sons were good American Democrats. Frederic was a most kind-hearted but rather prosy and long-winded man".
