John Smith Allan (b.1856)

"Jack" Allan, Executive with the Allan Steamship Line of Montreal & Glasgow

He was born at Montreal. In 1879, he married Adelaide, eldest daughter of The Hon. Matthew Hamilton Gault of Montreal. In 1892, Jack cashed a cheque for $10,000 and then promptly eloped without a word to San Francisco with Mrs Edith Montagu (Patterson) Hebden (b.1856), who in the following year obtained a divorce from her husband, Robert Young Hebden (b.1846), the manager of Jack's bank, the Bank of Montreal in New York. Jack was last heard of in 1893, living with Edith on a sheep farm near Melbourne, Australia, leaving six children in Montreal by his first marriage.
