John Philips (1734-1824)

J.P., D.L., Cotton Manufacturer, of Bank Hall, Lancashire

He grew up at Checkley Hall, Staffordshire. He succeeded to the head of the firm of J & N Philips and his brothers set up several offshoot companies to complement the main firm. John lived at Longsight Hall in Cheshire before purchasing Bank Hall in 1777. He was a Justice of the Peace and Deputy Lieutenant for both Lancashire and Cheshire, and President of the Stockport branch of the Wellington Club. The biography of his youngest son, Hardman, tells testament to his character.
