James Philips (1777-1808)

He was born at Bank Hall, Lancashire, and came to America in 1800 to take charge of the town of Philipsburg founded by his brother, Henry, who had died that year. Before setting to work, he explored some of the new continent and published Exploits In The Wilderness of North America. Once at Philipsburg, it was clear that James was not suited to the task and by the time he died eight years later, the town was reduced to just 24-inhabitants. His youngest brother, Hardman, was then sent out to succeed him and it was under his steam that Philipsburg became a thriving town.
