John Noble Alsop Griswold (1822-1909)

President of the Illinois Central Railroad & formerly U.S. Consul at Shanghai

He lived between 129 West 59th Street, New York City, and his summer home that still stands on Bellevue Avenue, Newport. His estate was valued at $25-million. In 1860, he married Jane, daughter of Dr. John Patten Emmet, nephew of the Irish rebel Robert Emmet. They had five children of whom four (listed) lived to adulthood.
