John Moore (1745-1828)
Deputy Collector of H.M. Customs, Superintendent of Police & Port of New York, etc.
He was described in the The Memorial History of the City of New York: "John Moore was Deputy Collector and Receiver-General of his Majesty's Customs in New-York while occupied by the British forces during the Revolution, and for ten years previous. He was a favorite in society, a writer of pleasant satires on the men and women of the city, gay and convivial. Some of his writings yet survive in manuscript. and throw light on the manners of the time. His son, Thomas W.C. Moore, shared his father's love for literature, wrote society verses, and was an intimate friend of Fitz-Greene Halleck, as their fathers had been before them." His wife had lived next door to her first cousin, Henry Livingston, who some scholars believe was the real author of "The Night Before Christmas/A Visit from St. Nicholas".
